Welcome to Construction Web's News PageConstruction Web Brings Organisations TogetherThu 20 Oct 2005 With the 2012 London Olympics on the horizon, the Constructing Excellence building in Victoria was the venue for the meeting. Organised by Construction Web, it was for the various organisations across boroughs to discuss the opportunities that the 2012 London Olympics would bring. It was nice to see so many different representatives around the table putting their heads together to find out the best way to push any possible partnerships forward. Construction Web’s Graham Arnold chaired the meeting. Those who attended were:
David Packman – Tower Hamlets Local Labour in Construction Roger Richmond – Greenwich Local Labour & Business Norma Welch – London Borough of Greenwich Jonathan De Souza – Constructing Excellence Paul Davies – London Riverside Ltd Vanessa Good – Building East Chris Collings – London Borough of Newham Ash Miah – Docklands Recruitment (JCP) Colin Middleton – London Borough of Hackney Tom Travers – London Development Agency Graham Arnold – Construction Web Keith Flaherty – London Borough of Waltham Forest Edwin O’Connell London Borough of Waltham Forest Chris Dransfield – London Borough of Waltham Forest Sheila Wright Construction Web Lloyd Heath – Construction Web
Some of the comments made were: Roger Richmond suggesting that the CITB should be involved in future meetings like these. Colin Middleton welcomed the opportunity to ‘talk out of the box’ and was concerned that it might be difficult to get all the construction workers that would be needed for the Olympics from the 5 boroughs. Chris Dransfield stated that those looking for work within construction need face-to-face contact with contractors to talk about their opportunities.
Paul Davies explained the 2 aims of job brokerage. i) To help those who need help in obtaining skills. ii) To encourage small local businesses to find the skills that they need.
Lloyd Heath emphasized the point that the young people are the future of construction and more should be done to attract them into the industry.
Keith Flaherty mentioned that there was no common framework providing business support and that he would like to see an adaptation of the common framework.
Jonathan De Souza spoke about the various business tool kits that Constructing Excellence provides.
Tom Travers fielded a lot of questions on the LDA’s approach to various construction issues around preparing for the 2012 London Olympics.
A lot of good points were raised around job brokerage support for SME’s, procurement , building a framework and supply chains. There were many more contributions also from David Packman, Sheila Wright, Vanessa Good, Chris Collings, Norma Welch, Ash Miah. All were very welcomed.
