Construction Web at the Under Construction EventTue 29 Nov 2005
Members of the Construction Web team,
Lloyd Heath, Graham Arnold
and Caron Henry attended the Under Construction Event at Friends House in London's
Euston.
The information room held representatives from Laings Training, Construction
Web, Pre-Vista Business Support Services, Escape, and Work Directions. The room
served as a vital contact point between job seekers and the invited organisations.
The presentations were split into two sites, Site A and Site B, and ran side
by side within a partitioned room. The seats were quickly taken up by jobseekers
even before the event officially started, such was the demand.
Nicholas Jones of CITB Construction Skills gave a strong presentation, hitting
upon some key points.
- The London Olympics has heightened the profile of the industry considerably.
- There is a shortage of workers across all trades.
- There is a great opportunity for ethnic minorities and women.
- There are new technology changes such as the vehicles that workers use on site.
- There is no need for a worker to stay in the same position for the rest of their
lives once in the construction industry.
- There are large apprenticeship programs available .
- Pre-Vista, Construction Web, and Job Centre Plus can help people find jobs.
Construction Web’s
Graham Arnold
also made some valuable points as he gave an overview of the services that Construction
Web provide, helping the employed, unemployed, and businesses.
-
Construction Web will play an important part in the Bernie Grant Centre.
-
Construction Web has teamed up with Mansells who should sign up 20% of local
labour.
-
There will be 55 packets of work that will take up to 3 and half years to complete.
-
Contractors will know exactly what type of people they need to employ.
-
There will be a local labour scheme on the Olympic site.
-
There is a need for construction workers and support workers. There were other presentations and the event was well attended within an informal
setting.
