CSCS – CONSTRUCTION SKILLS

                         CERTIFICATION SCHEME

CSCS cards are a means of registering competent workers in the construction industry. These cards therefore denote that workers have the necessary skills and health and safety training to do their jobs. The cards list the holder’s qualifications and are valid for either three or five years.

The CSCS scheme covers over 230 occupations and is widely recognised as the industry standard, with the CITB setting a target of 2010 for a fully qualified work force. The 'Major Contractors Group' of major construction companies, the 'Major Homes Builders Group', Civil Engineering Contractors' Association' and all the Olympic sites have stated that workers must have a CSCS card, or the equivalent trade card, in order secure employment on their sites. As at April 2006, CITB reported that ‘over 800,000 people working in the construction industry hold the CSCS card’.

Advantages of the scheme

·         It provides proof of trade

·         Shows that workers have knowledge of health and safety

·         Increases workers ability to get onto sites

Qualified candidates (i.e. those with an NVQ or SVQ) registered with Construction Web are eligible for free CSCS Health and Safety touch screen tests. We also arrange for assessors to come on site to monitor experienced workers working towards their CSCS cards.
